What is the Most Powerful 4-Cylinder Engine?
With so much history behind the brand, Mercedes-Benz is known for many things: Innovation, performance, style and luxury to name a few. As the years go on, the German manufacturer sees no end in sight, as they continue to innovate with various car parts and technologies. With cars improving year after year, what is the most powerful 4-cylinder engine?
The new king for power in a 4-cylinder engine is none other than the new Mercedes-AMG® 2.0-liter M 139 turbocharged engine. This new model is being built in Affalterbach, Germany, and is the next iteration after the M 133 engine. In fact, the M 133 was previously the most powerful 4-cylinder model, but the new 2.0-liter M 139 engine improves on its predecessor’s performance by 40 horsepower, offering a maximum of 416 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
This new engine will be available as two different versions, as the S models from Mercedes-AMG® feature the 416-horsepower version while base models will see the 382-horsepower version.
“We already set the benchmark in the segment with the preceding engine. This fundamentally new four-cylinder presented us with the challenge of doing even better. And we succeeded with a number of sometimes revolutionary solutions. With the M 139, we have once again impressively demonstrated the engine expertise of Mercedes-AMG. Not only is the output per liter unrivaled for a turbocharged engine, the high level of efficiency also demonstrates that the internal combustion engine still has further potential.”
–Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH
